What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia, or sub-respiratory tract infection, is the term used to describe an infection within the lungs. Most cases of pneumonia are caused by viruses and can appear after symptoms of the common cold. The number of cases of pneumonia caused by bacteria is low.
Signs & symptoms of Pneumonia
Symptoms of pneumonia in children can vary. They may resemble the common cold or upper respiratory tract symptoms. Common signs and symptoms of pneumonia include the following :
1) high fever
2) Cough
3) Rapid breathing
4) Difficulty breathing
5) Crackling sounds come from the lungs
6) No feeling of hunger
7) Vomiting due to coughing or swallowing phlegm
8) Generally feeling tired and disturbed mentally, physically and emotionally
9) Stomach (abdominal) pain
10) Rapid heartbeat
11) Bleeding in mucus
12) Getting cold
When to seek medical help
Contact your child's regular doctor if Your child's cough continues for more than three weeks Your child's fever lasts longer than 3 days after starting antibiotics Take your child to the nearest emergency department.
If your child
Difficulty in breathing is increasing Very yellow or blue lips Avoiding antibiotic medications or drinking alcohol You look very sick.

If your child is prescribed antibiotics, be sure to finish the entire course of antibiotics, even if your child is feeling better. Keep the child calm and hydrated.
